Common Puncture Repair questions

You should replace your tyres if: 1. The puncture is huge and deep. 2. There is internal damage to the tyre. 3. Your tyre’s sidewalls are punctured. A puncture is repairable if: 1. It has been punctured by a small object (a nail, bolt or screw). 2. The puncture is less than 5mm in diameter. 3. The puncture occurred within your tyres 'T' zone.

How do I read my tyre size?

Along with the manufacturer's name and the name of the tyre (e.g. Firestone F01), there's always a set of numbers and letters that relate to the size of your tyre.

In the example 205/40R17
  • 205 is the width of the tyre in millimetres.
  • 40 is the aspect ratio or tyre profile.
  • R means it is radial construction.
  • 17 is the diameter of the wheel rim in inches.
How often should I rotate my tyres?

In general, you should rotate your tyres every 5,000 to 8,000km, even if there is no sign of uneven wear. However, different vehicles will wear their front and back tyres at different rates. Front wheel drives wear tyres differently from rear-wheel drives, and station wagons and utes will have different wear patterns. If you’re not sure when to rotate your tyres, contact your nearest Tony’s Tyre & Auto Care location.

How can I avoid getting a puncture?

Although getting a puncture can be unexpected, there are some easy ways to reduce your chances of getting one. 1. Avoid road hazards. 2. Ensure your tyres are properly inflated. 3. Have regular wheel alignments to avoid uneven wear. 4. Check your tyre tread for embedded objects. 5. Never drive on a deflated tyre.
